How would you like to create deeper relationships or greater rapport with prospects and clients?
This is where you want to start: Being likable. Without it, it’s going to be tough to make meaningful connections with others.
To hold you over until then, start practicing these 3 easy techniques Janine Driver reveals in this segment of the Today Show on becoming more likable instantly.
1. Give Eye Contact…But Not Too Much.
Janine says that we have been encouraged to make too much eye contact. Although eye contact is necessary for improved rapport and relationships, too much can be a little intimidating. “Cops, lawyers, judges and used car salesmen, they give 80% to 100% [of eye contact in interactions],” which Janine says is too much to be likable in face-to-face communications. She recommends toning it down a bit to more like 60%.
Give people their space, and when you do make eye contact, look into what Janine refers to as the “upside-down triangle”, which covers the area from the eyebrows to the nose.
2. Make Warmer Introductions With A Well-Timed Smile.
Meeting someone new? Instead of flashing them a big smile before shaking their hand or introducing yourself, smile right after they say their name instead.
Doing so creates a greater sense of warmth, trustworthiness, and friendliness. It gives the impression that the person’s name brought you joy, and that meeting them was a pleasure.
3. Avoid Doing This With Your Hands.
Don’t intimidate a prospect during an initial meeting by placing your hands into a steeple shape. Can’t you picture Donald Trump holding his hands in this shape while a frightened apprentice pleads their case so they don’t get fired?
I’m sure fear isn’t the type of emotion you want to inspire within a potential client. Steepling your hands can work in some situations (negotiations, perhaps), but not when you’re trying to build rapport.
Pay attention to some of these tips. After all, the way you use your body language could be the invisible barrier keeping you from deeper relationships with others.
